Recharge Your iPhone

It might sound obvious, but make sure your iPhone battery is charged enough to run the phone.

To test this, plug your iPhone into a wall charger or into your computer. Leave it for 15-30 minutes. It can turn on automatically. You may also need to press the on/off button to turn it on.

If you suspect your phone is running out of battery but recharging isn't working, it's possible that your charger or cable is faulty. Try using another cable to check it. (If you haven't heard of it, you can now charge it using the wireless charging method for iPhone.)

Hard Reset iPhone

If charging the battery doesn't bring your iPhone back to life, the next thing you should try is a hard reset. A hard reset is like a restart in that it clears more device memory (but not storage. You won't lose data) for a more comprehensive reset. To perform a hard reset:

  1. Hold down the on/off button and the Home button at the same time. (If you have an iPhone 7 series, hold on/off and volume down.)
  2. Keep holding both of them for at least 10 seconds (there's nothing wrong with holding for 20 or 30 seconds, but if nothing happens then it probably won't)
  3. If the shut-down slider appears on the screen, keep holding the button
  4. When the white Apple logo appears, release the buttons and let the phone restart.

Restore iPhone to Factory Settings via iTunes

If your iPhone doesn't turn on, the next step you should take is to restore your iPhone to factory settings via iTunes (also known as Restore). By restoring your iPhone, you will erase all data and settings on your phone.

To restore iPhone to factory settings is very easy. Just sync iPhone and click restore button in iTunes. But if your iPhone still won't turn on, try the method below:

  1. Plug the iPhone's USB cable into the Lightning/Dock Connector port, but not your computer.
  2. Hold down the iPhone Home button (on iPhone 7, hold volume down).
  3. While holding down the Home button, plug the other end of the USB cable into your computer.
  4. This will open iTunes, put your iPhone into recovery mode, and let you completely restore your iPhone.

Put iPhone Into DFU Mode

In some situations, your iPhone may not turn on because it failed to boot. This can happen after a jailbreak or when you try to install an iOS update without enough battery life.

If you face this problem, put your phone into DFU mode like this:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  2. Hold down the on/off button for 3 seconds, then release.
  3. Hold down the on/off button and the Home button (on iPhone 7, hold down volume down) together for about 10 seconds.
  4. Release the on/off button, but keep holding the Home button (on iPhone 7, hold volume down) for about 5 seconds.
  5. If the screen remains black and nothing appears, you are in DFU Mode. Follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes.

Reset Proximity Sensor

Another rare situation that causes your iPhone to not turn on is a malfunction in the proximity sensor which dims the iPhone screen when you hold it against your face. This causes the screen to remain dark even if the phone is on and not near your face.

  1. Hold down the Home and on/off buttons to restart the phone.
  2. On restart, the screen should work.
  3. Tap the Settings app.
  4. Tap General.
  5. Tap Reset.
  6. Tap Reset All Settings. This deletes all of your preferences and settings on the iPhone, but will not delete your data.

If Your iPhone Still Doesn't Turn On

If your iPhone still won't turn on after trying all these steps, the problem might be too serious to fix on your own. You need to go out of the house to visit the nearest Apple Store or Apple Services Center at your place.
